Our General Dentistry Services Can Help You Overcome Dental Anxiety

General Dentistry Services

As providers of general dentistry services, we know that there are few fears on earth that are quite as intense as the anxiety of visiting a dentist causes some people. The fear of general dental services is extremely widespread around the world, and the United States is no exception. Roughly 9 percent to 20 percent of people are extremely afraid of the dentist, to the point where a large portion of these folks will never visit the dentist unless they have a dental emergency. In fact, we know that 26 percent of the population will not go to the dentist despite being fully aware that visiting the dentist office for general dentistry services would vastly improve their oral health and quality of life. Very often, this fear of the dentist chair springs from the unknown. When it has been a long time since your last checkup or if you are not sure how healthy your teeth may or may not be, it creates a sense of impending stress that builds up in your mind.

How using general dentistry services can help you overcome your fear of dentists

The truth is that most people are more afraid of the myth of being afraid of the dentist than they are of the actual procedures. All humans have a way of building up fear to unreasonable or unrealistic proportions. The best way for you to deal with your fear of general dental services is to attack it three different ways. First, you need to know what exactly it is you are afraid of. For some folks, this fear boils down to not liking to be out of control when they are in the dentist chair. For others, it is a fear of needles or that they may experience pain or discomfort. In any of these cases, it is much easier to deal with a fear once we have isolated it, and after which, we can work with or around it.

Second, spend some time learning about what we do and how we do it. This will ease your mind with regards to how safe you are and how it is of the utmost importance to us that you go through an entire procedure with as little discomfort as possible. Dentists are highly trained professionals who understand the importance of the job they do every day. We are also aware of fear as a factor and so are always willing to take the time to explain something to you, to show you how the equipment works, and to give you a crash course in what we are about to do for you.

Third and finally, the best way to overcome the fear of dentistry is not to wait until you have an emergency to come in and see us. Make it a habit to visit at least two times per year, which allows you to get used to the whole idea of dental work not being scary. This will allow you to be prepared in the event that you need more intensive dental work done. While here, we can also discuss your options for medication to help reduce any lingering concerns that you have.
